"Detroit for All, All for Detroit"
Welcome to the D.  // photo by Todd Sines … where we meet you with a closed fist instead of an open hand. And the D stands for Drama. Shot in 1994, this monument is on Jefferson Ave just across from Hart Plaza, the site of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Read/view “The World of Detroit Techno 1991-2005, A Photojournal by Todd Sines…” featured in The Daily...

State of the Union 2011
“And if we truly care about our deficit, we simply cannot afford a permanent extension of the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans. Before we take money away from our schools, or scholarships away from our students, we should ask millionaires to give up their tax break.” State of the Union 2011: Full text & video here

Finger Painting
We are going to be honest and say that finger painting in this way totally baffles us. What Judith Braun is doing here is quite incredible, as she is dipping her fingers in charcoal or pastels to create abstract forms and bilateral symmetry. You can get away with abstract, but this symmetry and skill here is unique. Source: Juxtapose

I Have A Dream
“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. Violence is immoral because it...

Diego Rivera - "Detroit Industry"
Source: Art of Lean This amazing mural, painted by Diego Rivera in 1932, is on display in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Corey’s great-great-grandpa is pictured in the center, wearing glasses and a grey hat, fixing something on the line.

Things to do in Detroit
This is a great list of Things to do in Detroit (the writer has a great sense of humor), here: Detroit City Guide. And though I knew of most of these places, it was nice to reference a list, complete with address and a neighborhood breakdown to lay it all out. Below are some of the things on the list that I did while in Detroit last week.  MoCAD: Very cool space and great art.  Bureau of Urban...

Beyond the Stoop: Fort Greene
Beyond the Stoop: NYT Interactive Map of South Elliott Place, Fort Greene The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the influx of many new residents and businesses to Fort Greene. While issues of gentrification are raised, Fort Greene stands to many as one of the best examples of a truly racially and economically diverse neighborhood with what The New York Times referred to it as a “prevailing...
